Baptism at Ingleside

We want all members to model what Jesus expected of all disciples. Baptism is a spiritual marker, a step of obedience, a symbol of our salvation, a way of identifying with the body of Christ, and a powerful witness to all who see us immersed in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Baptism Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why make such a big deal about baptism?

To put it simply, because Jesus did.

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. (Matthew 28:18-20)

  • Who should be baptized?

Anyone who is disciple of Christ–those who have heard the gospel, repented of their sin, and believed.

So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. (Acts 2:41)

  • Should infants be baptized?

No, because they have not yet heard the gospel, repented, and believed. The Bible has no command to baptize infants, nor is there an explicit example of infant baptism in the Bible.

  • How old should children be before they are baptized?

Old enough for there to be genuine repentance, a credible testimony of faith, and evidence of newness of life.

  • How should we baptize?

By immersion, because the meaning of the Greek New Testament word “baptize” is to dip, and because immersion best conveys the essential meaning of baptism – union by faith with Christ in his death, burial, and resurrection.
