An Invitation to a Better Life

When is the last time you read and reflected on the words of Jesus recorded in Matthew 11:28-30?  Perhaps they are for you today.

28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (ESV)

These words of Jesus are recast in today’s idiom in The Message paraphrase of this passage.  It says:

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

Who is invited?  All who are tired, worn out, burned out, heavily burdened.  Those who have no peace and no rest.  Jesus says there is a better way to live.

What is the invitation?  Jesus says:  Come to me.  Connect with me.  Walk with me.  Learn from me.  Though our outward circumstances may not change, a personal relationship with Jesus can transform our lives.

What is the promise?  Rest for our souls.  A lighter burden.  An easier way.  A life in step with the Spirit.  Companionship with a gentle, yet strong Savior.

So, don’t delay.  Say “yes” to his invitation.  Come to Christ today, and begin to learn from him “the unforced rhythms of grace.”

Grateful for a Pastoral Team

For many years, our church has been led and served by a pastoral team.  While I am away on a combination of family vacation and study break, Sunday preaching responsibilities will be handled effectively by other pastors on our team as follows:

Sunday, July 20                Mark Hudgins, Membership Pastor

Sunday, July 27                Justin Nalls, Middle School Pastor

Sunday, August 3             Andy Johnson, Children’s Pastor

Sunday, August 10           Mark Hudgins, Membership Pastor

I will be speaking again, Lord willing, on Sunday, August 17.  Until my return, if you are in town I am counting on you to be in church.  You’ll be blessed as you support and hear our pastoral team.
