When our lives are transformed by God’s grace and filled with the Spirit, one of the results will be a grateful heart. We will approach every day, every relationship, and every circumstance with a bias toward giving thanks.
Perhaps that’s why the Apostle Paul mentions gratitude and thanksgiving three different times in the space of just six verses (Colossians 3:12-16) that describe who we are and how we are to live in Christ. This powerful passage concludes by saying:
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed,
do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks to God the Father through him.
(Colossians 3:17, NIV)
When our disposition is one of gratitude to God, it implies several things about our perspective. As Gordon MacDonald has observed in his book, A Resilient Life, when we are thankful . . .
It implies humility: I cannot get along by myself.
It implies reliance: I need others, and I need God.
It implies value: I recognize and appreciate the cost of what I have received.
It implies gladness: joy has come to my life from God and others.
Join me in asking the Father to shape us by the Word and the Spirit into genuinely thankful people!
