One Worship Service this Sunday

This Sunday, December 29, there will again be one worship service only at 10:30 a.m.  Childcare is provided for birth through age four.  Since there is no age-group programming, ages five and above are welcome in the Worship Center.  Bring your friends and family, and worship at Ingleside this Sunday!

The Grace of Giving

As we approach the end of the calendar year and many consider making year-end charitable gifts, I want to offer a word concerning a biblical pattern for generous giving.  The biblical standard for believers related to giving is as follows:

But just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech,
in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us—
see that you also excel in this grace of giving.”
(2 Corinthians 8:7, NIV)

This means our giving will be proportional to our income, generous, voluntary, and cheerful.  At Ingleside, we have long taught that to “excel in this grace of giving” involves at least the following three dimensions.

  1. A “tithe” (10%) of our income to our local church.  Giving at least a tithe is a beginning point of obedience to the Lord.  So, if you have not done so already, begin to give a tithe of your income to the general, operating fund (that supports ministries to all ages and life stages) of our church.
  2. “Offerings” at our local church over and above our tithe.  A second step in generous giving, in addition to our tithe, is the “offerings” we make for special causes (world missions, benevolence, new construction, etc.).  As God prospers, give generously to our church in offerings beyond your tithe.
  3. Charitable giving (over and above our tithes and offerings) to other para-church missions and ministries that are faithful to the gospel of Jesus Christ.  As God prospers, a pattern of generous giving will also include gifts to support other Christian organizations that focus on some specific dimension of ministry.

This is a pattern that my wife, Beverly, and I have practiced personally for decades and have taught to our girls.  We encourage you to do the same.

Of course, I am aware that many at Ingleside have long excelled in this grace of giving.  As a result, countless lives have been changed, our church has flourished, and God has been glorified by your generosity.  I am grateful for your partnership!

To be sure, those of us at Ingleside now benefit greatly from the financial faithfulness of those who have gone before us.  The gospel influence of our church in the future will depend on our generous giving today.  By God’s grace, determine to “excel in this grace of giving.”

Happy New Year to you and yours!
