A Gracious, Generous God

As we move out of the Christmas season and toward the new year, I am reminded that one of the many things we see in God at Christmas is that he is a generous, giving God. The Bible says, “God so loved the world, that he gave his only son…” (John 3:16). From him, we have received “grace upon grace” (John 1:16).

In addition to our salvation, his generosity is seen in his provision for us, including not only meeting our needs but often so much more. As 1 Timothy 6:17 says, God “richly provides us with everything to enjoy.”

As His people, we are called to be conduits of His grace and reflect His generosity. Our generosity is evidence of spiritual maturity.

Biblical generosity begins with a tithe (the first 10%) of our income to the local church and then giving above and beyond that as we are able. Such generosity allows us to fulfill the mission God has given us – to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the glory of God!

As we near the end of another year and think about God’s generosity toward us, let’s renew our commitment to be a “cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).
