What Is Jesus’ View of Scripture?
When deciding what we believe about the Bible, one of the questions we should ask is, “What is Jesus’ view of Scripture?” We should always seek to align our beliefs and practices with the teachings of Jesus, including about the Bible.
Below are ten truths that give us insight into Jesus’ view of Scripture. They are compiled from a sermon by Andy Davis (Pastor of First Baptist Church, Durham, North Carolina) and a book titled The Doctrine of Scripture by Mark Thompson.
- Jesus would rather die than disobey Scripture (Matthew 26:52-54)
- Jesus taught that the Scriptures teach the truth about him (Matthew 5:17; John 5:39-40)
- Jesus taught the unbreakable authority and permanence of Scripture (Matthew 5:18-19)
- Jesus considered Scripture to be the word of God (Mark 7:9-13)
(Jesus quotes Exodus 20 and refers to it as “the word of God.”) - Jesus taught that every detail of Scripture is true (Matthew 22:41-46)
(Jesus was proving his deity from Scripture. His argument here depends on a single word – “my.”) - Jesus taught that historical events recorded in Scripture are true (Matthew 10:15, 12:40, 19:4, 24:37-39)
- Jesus taught that Scripture is authoritative (Matthew 19:1-9; Mark 2:23-3:6)
- Jesus lived without sin, moment by moment, by all Scripture (Matthew 4:1-11)
- Jesus instilled passion about Scripture in the hearts of his disciples (Luke 24:32, 45)
- Jesus taught that we should build our lives on Scripture (Matthew 7:24; Luke 11:28)
Let’s allow Jesus’ teaching to shape our view of Scripture, that we might continue to trust and treasure the word of God!
